“Just say thank you

and don’t ask questions”

I was half expecting another close encounter with the sofa cushions as a reward for spilling Meg’s secret, but if anything my sister seemed relieved. The termination appointment wasn’t for another week, but already it felt like Meg was no longer pregnant. Nobody mentioned it, and life carried on as though nothing had ever happened. The weird thing was—I couldn’t stop thinking about it.

Even though I no longer had to wrestle the Cramp Bed each night, I hadn’t been sleeping too well. The boy with the blue hair was making regular appearances in my dreams, throwing himself willfully into harm’s way just to taunt me. I’d wake up not sure if I’d been shouting Gonzo! out loud or just in the dream. Once awake, I found it hard to get back to sleep again. I’d spent the last two nights sitting up in bed listening to music on my laptop. Which probably explained why it felt as though somebody had crept into my room during the early hours and glued weights to my eyelids.

It had to stop.

What was my problem? Meg was having a termination so there wouldn’t be a real baby, yet I couldn’t even get rid of the imaginary one in my head.

Now don’t take that the wrong way, G—but you need to see it from my point of view. I seriously thought I was going mad. I had all the signs: voices in my head, weird dreams, talking to myself, not sleeping. The situation was getting desperate and it wasn’t as if there was anybody I could talk to about it.

I still hadn’t heard anything back from Jack, even though I’d emailed him three times from Mum’s computer. There had been no replacement Dead Frank in the post either.
